After writing about the First Amendment, I needed something bright. Something sharp enough to wake the palate but not heavy enough to dull the mind.
Legal debates linger. They coat the tongue. They demand precision and resist easy answers. When the conversation turns to expression, faith, business, and equality, the air feels charged.
Not something syrupy. Not something brooding. But something crisp — something that cuts cleanly through the noise and reminds you that clarity can be refreshing.
This one leads with citrus, softened by rose, grounded by mint and thyme. It is gentle on alcohol, as my cocktails tend to be. If you prefer more heat, add a half teaspoon more. I prefer restraint.
Because even in moments of dissent, composure matters.
INGREDIENTS
[serves one with a refill]
a half cup of fresh-squeezed orange juice
a quarter cup of Sprite
three-quarters teaspoon of Tito’s vodka
ten small mint leaves, chopped
a half teaspoon of rose syrup
a half teaspoon of lemon juice
eight small ice cubes
one large square ice cube
one twig of mint
one twig of French thyme
In a cocktail shaker, add all the ingredients except the square ice cube and the twigs of mint and thyme. In a lowball glass, place the large square ice cube. Shake the ingredients in the cocktail shaker and pour into the lowball glass using a cocktail strainer. Garnish with twigs of mint and French thyme before serving.
Sip slowly. Let the citrus lead and the rose soften the edge.
Cheers.
